inspiration and enlightenment on social media and business

the role of you

As a business founder you start out ‘doing’. You’re the one making the sales, making the product, doing the GST return, setting up a database system, creating a website… tea lady; you name it; you’re it.

Then the business (hopefully) grows and you start (hopefully) delegating or outsourcing some of your workload. This is where lots of us become unstuck. If we’re a ’starter’ we’re likely to be control-freaks and perfectionists. If we don’t ‘let go’ we become the bottleneck in our own businesses and stifle any real growth.

The next stage in our role – if we make it – is heading our team – cheerleading and coaching, setting the direction, and planning and communicating. We’re not ‘doing’ any more.

Next comes consolidation; we’re innovating for the next step, building the business and being the figurehead for the organisation.

:::: That’s a whole lot of ‘metamorphosing’! We have to grow our strengths, realise our weaknesses and develop our skills. That means we have to think at different levels; so it’s good to have our thinking challenged by peers and mentors.
